Projecting NFL draft trades that could create more first-round chaos and welcoming back the USFL
What? No major NFL draft-altering trades?
But we've gotten so used to one blockbuster after another this offseason!
So, we thought it was time to fill the void by projecting some more trades that could create more first-round chaos in the latest version of Paste BN Sports' NFL mock draft.
- From retired at 20 to chasing NFL dream: At Oklahoma, Grant Calcaterra looked like a surefire future NFL tight end. Then he retired after three concussions, but football pulled him back.
- Trade partner? Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has voiced an interest in swinging an NFL draft trade.
- Where are the quarterbacks? Malik Willis and Matt Corral are the only QBs who will be among the 21 players to attend the draft in Las Vegas.
Spring football, anyone?
The United States Football League returned Saturday, decades after the original USFL's three-year run, with several tweaked rules in order to provide fans with more modern, fast-paced elements.
The Birmingham Stallions beat the New Jersey Generals in a 28-24 thriller in the inaugural contest on Saturday. On Sunday, the Houston Gamblers beat the Michigan Panthers 17-12, and the New Orleans Breakers earned a 23-17 win over the Philadelphia Stars.
Here are a few takeaways from the spring league's first weekend.
NFL news, notes and analysis
- 'No longer safe': NFL linebacker Kylie Fitts retires at 27, citing “too many concussions and the severity of my recent one."
- 'Backed into a corner': Even after he avoided criminal charges, the allegations against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson leave him under more scrutiny in civil lawsuits.
- Shooting investigation: The attorney for Cowboys CB Kelvin Joseph says his client "did not shoot" Cameron Ray but added he was a passenger in a car from which shots were fired.
- Dan Snyder has to go: Commanders owner's ouster from the NFL is past due, writes Jarrett Bell, but maybe the latest allegations will be the reason for the league to take action.
- Sexist comments: Former Panthers QB Cam Newton made comments about the role of women in society during an appearance on a Barstool Sports podcast.
- Dwayne Haskins' wife issues statement: Kalabrya Haskins expressed her thanks to those who have reached out since Steelers QB's death.
- Receiver for Rodgers: The Packers sign veteran WR Sammy Watkins, who had one of his best seasons in 2017 with Matt LaFleur coordinating the Rams' offense, to a one-year deal.
- Good move? The Colts made a long-awaited splash in free agency by adding Stephon Gilmore, but it's unclear how much better the move makes Indianapolis, writes Gregg Doyel.
- $518,000 refund: The auction house that handled the purchase of Tom Brady's "final" touchdown pass says the sale has been voided due to the Bucs QB's unretirement.
- Negotiations on hold: Contract talks between the Cardinals and Kyler Murray have gone nowhere, and the QB's agent has pulled his opening offer, according to NFL Media.
- Disrespected 100%: Baker Mayfield made it clear he doesn't appreciate the way the Browns, who traded for controversial QB Deshaun Watson, handled their business with him this offseason.
