NFL Week 3 breakdown: Dolphins drop 70-burger, Cardinals upset Cowboys
Week 3 of the 2023 NFL season is (almost) in the books, and you would have to be old enough to have seen every Super Bowl in order to have seen the last NFL 70-burger.
Here are some of the most important developments from Sunday:
- The Miami Dolphins became the first NFL team since 1966 to drop a 70-burger, and fourth overall (regular season and playoffs): 1966 Washington (72 vs. New York Giants), 1950 Los Angeles Rams (70 vs. Baltimore Colts) and 1940 Chicago Bears (73 vs. Washington in the 1940 NFC championship game). Fun fact about that 1950 Rams team: They scored 65 the next week!
- The Dallas Cowboys capped a rough week during which they lost Pro Bowl cornerback Trevon Diggs for the season by ruining a lot of peoples' survivor pools in a stunning upset loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
- The New England Patriots have won 15 consecutive games against the New York Jets.
- In his first start at Lambeau Field, Jordan Love helped lead what is now tied for the largest fourth-quarter comeback in Green Bay Packers history.
- Not sure if you'd seen or heard, but Taylor Swift was at the Kansas City Chiefs game.
NFL Week 3 key storylines
- Winners and losers: From Josh McDaniels' bizarre fourth-quarter field-goal call to the Dolphins' dominant outing, Week 3 in the NFL featured some stunning turns.
- 32 things we learned: It was a rough weekend for the undefeated, with five 2-0 clubs losing Sunday. Speaking of rough ... 70-burger 🍔? Seriously?
- Worst NFL loss this week? As convincingly lopsided as the Dolphins' win was, it might not have been the worst loss on a Blowout Sunday in the NFL, Jarrett Bell writes.
- Broncos reeling after monumental beatdown: Sean Payton said he was at a "loss for words" after his Broncos were repeatedly burned in a 70-20 loss to the Dolphins.
- Do the Commanders have a QB problem? Making his fourth NFL start, Sam Howell threw four interceptions and was sacked nine times in his first career loss.

NFL Week 3 results
- Pittsburgh Steelers 23, Las Vegas Raiders 18: Kenny Pickett threw for two touchdowns as the Steelers earned their first road win against the Raiders since 1995.
- Arizona Cardinals 28, Dallas Cowboys 16: Before this survivor pool-busting result, the Cardinals had lost 14 of their last 15 games at home dating back to 2021.
- Kansas City Chiefs 41, Chicago Bears 10: Taylor Swift showed up to watch Travis Kelce score a touchdown in this rout of the woebegone Bears.
- Seattle Seahawks 37, Carolina Panthers 27: A strong second-half performance powered this Seahawks win against a Panthers team playing without top pick Bryce Young.
- New England Patriots 15, New York Jets 10: The Patriots humbled the Jets again, winning for a 15th consecutive time in this series.
- Indianapolis Colts 22, Baltimore Ravens 19 (OT): The Colts' Matt Gay became the first NFL kicker to make four field goals of 50-plus yards in a single game, that included the game-winning 53-yarder.
- Buffalo Bills 37, Washington Commanders 3: The Bills pummeled young Commanders quarterback Sam Howell, who was sacked nine times and threw four interceptions.
- Cleveland Browns 27, Tennessee Titans 3: The Browns defense was dominant, holding the Titans to their fewest yards (94) since the team moved from Houston to Tennessee.
- Miami Dolphins 70, Denver Broncos 20: The Dolphins scored the most points in a game by an NFL team since 1966. The Dolphins are just the fourth team to score 70 or more points in a game (regular season or postseason). The most, of course, is the Chicago Bears' 73-0 rout of Washington in the 1940 NFL championship game.
- Houston Texans 37, Jacksonville Jaguars 17: You know it's your day when a fullback returns a kickoff for a touchdown.
- Green Bay Packers 18, New Orleans Saints 17: Jordan Love's first start at Lambeau Field resulted in a thrilling come-from-behind victory.
- Los Angeles Chargers 28, Minnesota Vikings 24: Kenneth Murray Jr. bailed out his coach, Brandon Staley, who inexplicably decided to go for it on fourth-and-1 at his own 24-yard line inside the two-minute warning.
- Detroit Lions 20, Atlanta Falcons 6: The Lions gave up their fewest points since a 17-3 win over the Arizona Cardinals in 2018, and set up a nice "Thursday Night Football" matchup against the Packers for first place in the NFC North.
- San Francisco 49ers 30, New York Giant 12 (Thursday): The 49ers are the third team in NFL history to start a season 3-0 and score the same number of points in each game, joining the 2007 New England Patriots (38 points) and 1936 Pittsburgh Pirates (10 points).
