NFL Week 6 is here ...
➤ About last night: San Francisco 49ers 36, Seattle Seahawks 24 — Not every TNF game can be Falcons-Buccaneers. The Niners made the Week 6 opener a fairly routine affair, looking much like the team that's been knocking on the door of a title the last few seasons. They piled up the yardage on the ground and scored a season high in points to dispatch the division rival Seahawks and regain first place in the NFC West.
➤ Game of the week: Washington Commanders at Baltimore Ravens — It's prove-it time for sensational rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels and the upstart Commanders. The Commanders (4-1) might be a hopeful contender riding an early season four-game winning streak, but the Ravens are a been-there, done-that (minus winning the big one, of course, but that's another conversation) annual contender. After an 0-2 start, the Ravens have won three in a row. The offense is clicking with reigning league MVP Lamar Jackson and ground-and-pound running back Derrick Henry leading the charge. Daniels is looking to do something that hasn't been done since 1957: win the MVP award as a rookie.
➤ Sneaky-good game of the week: Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys — More "game of the week II" than "sneaky-good," as two expected NFC contenders clash at "Jerry World." These two played a thriller last season, when the Cowboys eked out a 20-19 win at home in Week 17. These two 2023 division winners see themselves sitting in second place in their respective divisions looking up at upstarts. The Cowboys – who had won 16 consecutive regular season games at home entering the season – have yet to win at AT&T Stadium and have collected all of their 2024 wins on the road. Lions quarterback Jared Goff enters this one after having completed all 18 of his passes in Detroit's last game, and he needs to complete his first seven pass attempts in Sunday's game to tie an NFL record (25 straight completions, done four times previously).
➤ Dreadful game of the week: Cleveland Browns at Philadelphia Eagles — The Browns are just depressing, saddled with the debacle that is the acquisition of quarterback Deshaun Watson, whose numbers are just dreadful. The Browns possess exceptional talent at nearly every other position group, with Watson as the metaphorical (and financial) dead weight for what once was a promising team. The Eagles, meanwhile, are coming off the bye week, which came following a drubbing at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4. Still, it's totally expected that Philadelphia will add to Cleveland's misery in this one.
➤ Game I'm mildly interested in, and not just because I have J.K. Dobbins on my fantasy team: Los Angeles Chargers at Denver Broncos — The Chargers are coming off a bye week, which means quarterback Justin Herbert had an extra week to heal his ailing ankle. It will also be interesting to see how head coach Jim Harbaugh utilized his "opportunity week" to figure out a lackluster offense. That unit will face a tough test against the Broncos defense, which is tied for second in points allowed per game (14.6) and third in yards allowed per game (271.2). On offense, the Broncos' Bo Nix is the first rookie quarterback in franchise history to start and win three consecutive games. That run has Denver in the thick of the early season playoff race after an 0-2 start.
➤ Just going to rank some games I'm interested in watching without giving any context:
- Buffalo Bills at New York Jets
- Arizona Cardinals at Green Bay Packers
- Houston Texans at New England Patriots
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers at New Orleans Saints
- Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans
➤ Don't forget to set your alarm ⏰, there's a London game on Sunday: Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Chicago Bears — The Jaguars return to their home away from home to face the resurgent Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium at 9:30 a.m. ET or 6:30 a.m. for those of us based on the Best Coast. The Jaguars are playing in London on back-to-back weeks (they face the New England Patriots at Wembley Stadium next week). These will be the Jaguars' 12th and 13th International Series games, with each of the previous 11 taking place in London. While the Jaguars are coming off their first win of the season, the Bears are rolling behind an improving Caleb Williams and resurgent running game.

NFL news, notes and analysis
➤ Coaches on the hot seat: With the Robert Saleh era with the New York Jets coming to an unceremonious end this week, which NFL head coaches could be next to be relieved of their duties?
➤ Jets' coaching candidates: Yes, of course, Bill Belichick is among the obvious names to come to mind. But, there are some others whose names will come up for this new job vacancy, or those still yet to come.
➤ Jets' firing of Robert Saleh traces back to Aaron Rodgers: Rodgers couldn’t fire himself. And surely, the fading Jets quarterback has no stomach to cast aside Nathaniel Hackett, his pal of a coordinator. Yet Robert Saleh? Roadkill.
➤ Russell Wilson is inevitable: Yes, Justin Fields has been better than many may have expected as the fill-in quarterback, but Wilson's availability suggests coach Mike Tomlin’s big decision is coming soon.
➤ Number of rookie starting QBs now up to five: While Drake Maye is getting the starting call by the Patriots, Spencer Rattler is an injury replacement in New Orleans for Derek Carr.

This is too easy.
The Steelers are playing the Raiders this week, and anybody with any sense of NFL lore will automatically recall the "Immaculate Reception" when reminiscing about the history between these two teams.
Much of the notable Raiders-Steelers history, of course, took place during professional football's romping-stomping 1970s heyday. The Raiders and Steelers met in three consecutive AFC championship games between the 1974 and 1976 seasons, but those showdowns came after the events of a dramatic divisional playoff clash that produced what is considered the greatest play in NFL history, one so controversial that it will be carefully dissected for as long as pro football is played.
The addendum to that epic game was that the Steelers lost the next week in the AFC title game to the Miami Dolphins, who went on to win Super Bowl VII and finish the 1972 season 17-0. The Steelers' 1970s dynasty would be born two years later.
