Gabby Thomas is golden 👩🏾‍⚕️🥇

Your Olympics essentials.

Résumé check, Lane 7.

Gabby Thomas, a self described late-bloomer, turned on the burners in the 200 meter sprint last night and jetted her way to gold. And good for her. She gives off a decidedly "stars, they’re just like us!" vibe. But check the résumé.

  • She went to Harvard to study neurobiology.
  • She has her master’s degree in public health with a concentration in epidemiology.
  • When not training, she volunteers at an Austin, Texas, health clinic.
  • She’s competing in her second consecutive Olympics.
  • She's now an Olympic gold medalist.

"I never would have imagined in my wildest dreams that I would become an Olympic gold medalist and I am one," Thomas said after winning. "I’m still wrapping my head around that."

Meet wrestling’s young GOAT.

Amit Elor, 20, became the youngest U.S. wrestler to win an Olympic gold medal. She hasn’t lost an international match since 2019. That is, count 'em, 41 straight dubs. Her coach calls her a generational talent. She is considered the sports young GOAT.

But her journey has not been an easy one. In 2018, she mourned the death of her older brother Oshry, who was killed at his house during an attempted robbery. Then, in 2022, her father Yair died suddenly and unexpectedly, under heart-wrenching circumstances in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She won her first match of these Games on Monday, which would’ve been her dad’s 67th birthday.

"I think I have a little bit of imposter syndrome," Elor said after winning. "I still feel like that little kid who just started wrestling. But currently, I just became an Olympic champion."
