Coronavirus Watch: Monday was deadliest day in US
More than 500 deaths were reported nationwide Monday, the highest daily total since the first American died from the new coronavirus six weeks ago, bringing the nationwide death toll up to more than 3,400 people.

Here's the latest, as of 1:30 p.m. ET:
- More than 175,000 people in the U.S. have been infected across all 50 states and the District of Columbia. See a map of confirmed cases here.
- More than 900 people have died in New York City alone. The city was opening temporary hospitals, like one in Central Park, and refrigeration trucks were serving as temporary morgues.
- Dr. Anthony Fauci said today that social distancing is working and that the rate of increase of cases in New York City might be slowing.
- A New Jersey National Guardsman is the first U.S. service member to die of COVID-19, the Pentagon announced last night.
- The World Health Organization is urging nations adopting strict stay-at-home orders to take care of their poor populations struggling to survive under the restrictions.
- Virginians are under orders to stay at home until June 10.

- Workers at an Amazon warehouse on Staten Island, New York, walked out during lunch Monday over concerns about safety at the job site.
- Macy's and Kohl's are furloughing a "majority" of workers, and Gap Inc. is "pausing pay" for the majority of store workers in the U.S. and Canada.
