Coronavirus Watch: More of us may have been infected and didn't know it

As protests continue to put pressure on state legislators to reopen local economies across the U.S., new research suggests that coronavirus could be less lethal than originally anticipated.

It's Monday, and this is Coronavirus Watch, courtesy of the Paste BN Network. Here's the latest news, as of 2 p.m. ET.

  • New research suggests many more people have had coronavirus without showing symptoms, which could mean the true death rate of the virus is lower than anticipated.
  • The head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates roughly 25% of people infected might not have symptoms, while Gen. John Hyten, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, puts that mark between 60% and 70% among military personnel. However, these numbers can't be fully trusted because they are based on inadequate testing, Dr. Michael Mina of Harvard’s School of Public Health told the Associated Press.
  • Hundreds of protesters convened Monday at the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg to demonstrate in favor of reopening the state's economy. Meanwhile, in Colorado, counter-protesters equipped with scrubs and medical apparel were shown blocking people demonstrating against the state's stay-at-home orders.
  • The White House and Congressional leaders remained close on a $300 billion deal aimed at helping small businesses. The package would send funds to the Paycheck Protection Program, which quickly depleted an initial $349 billion in small business loans.
  • Confirmed cases of coronavirus numbered at more than 765,000 in the U.S., while the nation's death toll was over 40,000, according to Johns Hopkins data.
  • Globally, there are more than 2.4 million cases confirmed and 167,000 deaths.
  • South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster was expected to announce Monday that beaches and retail stores in the state would be allowed to reopen, multiple lawmakers told the Paste BN Network's Greenville News.
  • As some restrictions begin to loosen across the nation, here is a state-by-state tracker for reopening policies.
  • Ahead of what would've been its 50th anniversary celebration, New York City's Pride Parade was canceled, Mayor Bill de Blasio said.
  • A cruise ship wrapped up a 15-week trip and docked in Barcelona with no coronavirus cases, the ship's owner reported. As the virus spread rapidly on land, the Costa Deliziosa sailed the last five weeks with virtually no human contact with the outside world.
