Coronavirus Watch: The US is at a plateau, expert says

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention added to its list of coronavirus symptoms, while a top health expert said the U.S. has reached a plateau of new cases.

This is Sunday's Coronavirus Watch newsletter, from the Paste BN Network.

Here's the latest news, as of 2 p.m. ET.

  • The CDC's list of coronavirus symptoms now includes fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chills, repeated shaking with chills, muscle pain, headache, sore throat and new loss of taste or smell.
  • The U.S. has reached a plateau in terms of new cases, said Tom Inglesby, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. “Unfortunately, it is a very high plateau," he said.
  • Inglesby said on Fox News Sunday that the nation is getting close to the "end of the beginning," but was skeptical of Vice President Mike Pence's remark that the virus could largely be "behind us" by Memorial Day.
  • A China health official told reporters Sunday that the final coronavirus patient in Wuhan hospitals was discharged. Wuhan and the province of Hubei, where the virus is believed to have emerged, went on lockdown in January, but has recently taken steps towards reopening.
  • The U.S. was nearing 1 million confirmed cases of the virus Sunday, while the death toll was just over 54,000, according to Johns Hopkins data.
  • Worldwide, there are more than 2.9 million confirmed cases and 205,000 deaths from the virus.
  • In New York, the epicenter in the U.S. for the outbreak, the most recent daily death count of 367 was the lowest mark in weeks, while Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the state plans to reopen in phases, with construction and some manufacturing being a part of the first wave.
  • British Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to return to work Monday after recovering from coronavirus.
  • Some mayors in Georgia are countering the governor's decision to reopen businesses like gyms, tattoo parlors, and hair salons. State policy allowed churches to open, but Savannah Mayor Van Johnson asked more than 70 religious leaders to keep their worship centers closed. None of the leaders said they would reopen.
