Coronavirus Watch: Obama chimes in on US response


A top economic adviser offered a grim prediction of the nation's unemployment outlook and former President Barack Obama called the United States' response to the coronavirus outbreak an "absolute chaotic disaster."

  • Obama said Friday that tribalism in the U.S. and around the world has contributed to an "anemic and spotty" response to the virus. He blamed a "mindset of 'what's in it for me' and 'to heck with everyone else'" in President Donald Trump's administration.
  • As job losses continue to crash through the U.S., the unemployment rate could eclipse 20%, nearing the Great Depression mark of 25%, White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett said Sunday. 
  • In the midst of a pandemic, this Mother's Day is different than any other in recent memory, but for some it brings a gift they might not see again.
  • Two top officials from the CDC and the FDA, both members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, will self-quarantine for two weeks after coming in contact with a person who tested positive, officials said.
  • Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has been at the White House where two staffers tested positive for the virus, tested negative and will be taking "necessary precautions" after he had less exposure to the cases than others, a spokesperson for National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said. 
  • Nearly 79,000 have died of the coronavirus in the U.S., while more than 1.3 million cases have been confirmed, per Johns Hopkins University data.
  • Globally, more than 4 million cases have been confirmed and 280,000 have died.
