Coronavirus Watch: Virus won't simply disappear, Fauci says


Will the coronavirus simply disappear, as President Trump has suggested? Dr. Anthony Fauci on Tuesday said that's unlikely to happen and that the country should be preparing for a second wave of the virus in the fall.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, made the comments Tuesday during a much-anticipated Senate committee hearing. Read more here.

It's Tuesday, and this is the Coronavirus Watch from the Paste BN Network. Here is the latest news, as of 12:30 p.m. ET:

  • Almost 81,000 people have died from the coronavirus in the U.S., which has seen 1.35 million cases. Worldwide, there have been close to 290,000 deaths and 4.2 million infections. 
  • Coronavirus testing: The U.S. is on track this week to have conducted 10 million coronavirus tests, President Trump said in announcing that states would receive $11 billion in additional funding for testing. 
  • A vaccine by the start of school year? During the Senate hearing, Republican Sen. Lamar Alexander asked Fauci if a treatment or a vaccine would be ready in time for colleges planning to start classes in August. Fauci warned relying on that prospect was "a bridge too far."
  • However, research is being accelerated on seven or eight "top" vaccine candidates to combat the coronavirus, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said this week.
  • Major League Baseball is aiming to start its 82-game season without fans in July after being sidelined in spring training by the coronavirus. On Monday, MLB owners approved a proposal requiring teams to share 50% of their revenue with the players association.
  • Still waiting on your stimulus cash? Wednesday is the deadline to enter your direct deposit information online at IRS.gov. Otherwise, you'll get a check via snail mail.
  • Trump on Monday downplayed the new coronavirus cases in his administration, saying he "felt no vulnerability whatsoever."
  • Will the pandemic claim a major airline? With no signs the travel industry will rebound quickly, the CEO of Boeing thinks one major U.S. carrier won't survive the coronavirus pandemic. 
  • The Chinese city of Wuhan plans to administer COVID-19 tests to all its residents over a 10-day period, according to Reuters, which cited an internal document.
