Coronavirus Watch: Choosing between saving lives and economy is 'false dichotomy'
Today was a massive reopening day all across America, but many people are still working from home (and most of us were not prepared to do so.)
Also working from home: The World Health Organization. The WHO held its annual convention via teleconference for the first time where the group discussed the coronavirus pandemic. Here's what else has come up and is expected at the meeting:
- U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that it was a "false dichotomy" to assume governments would choose between saving their citizens or their economies.
- European nations and Australia are calling for an investigation into the WHO's initial response to the pandemic.
- China's Xi Jinping pledged $2 billion over two years to fight the coronavirus pandemic and the economic fallout from it.
This is Coronavirus Watch from Paste BN. Here's the latest news, as of 1 p.m. ET:
- Two grim milestones are approaching: America will pass the mark of 90,000 dead from coronavirus and also will record 1,500,000 confirmed cases. See a map of confirmed cases here.
- SCOTUS will likely start issuing decisions: We may hear more about LGBTQ workers, almost half of whom live in states with no protections, and many are on the front lines of the coronavirus fight.
- Will the U.S. be ready if a second wave hits? Probably not. Many epidemiologists, economists and futurists say the U.S. is probably ill-prepared.
- Elvis Presley's Graceland reopens: Tour capacity will be reduced to 25% and temperature checks will be given to guests this week.
- Drugmaker Moderna sees positive results: Scientists conducting a trial for one of the leading vaccine candidates for the new coronavirus reported positive results Monday from the initial stages of their research.
- When a coronavirus vaccine is developed, who will be first in line to get it? No matter how well-prepared we are, there won’t immediately be enough of the coronavirus vaccine to immunize all Americans. A CDC panel usually decides.
- President Trump's son Eric says Democrats and their presumptive presidential nominee Joe Biden are discouraging efforts to begin reopening the country because that would allow Trump to conduct campaign rallies.
