Coronavirus Watch: What a COVID-19 damaged lung looks like
Surgeons in Chicago gave a new set of lungs to a young woman with severe lung damage from the coronavirus. The patient, who is her 20s, was on a ventilator and heart-lung machine for almost two months before her operation last Friday.
Only a few other COVID-19 survivors, in China and Europe, have received lung transplants.
The disease left holes in her lungs. It's a grisly sight, but this is what a COVID-19 damaged lung looks like.
It's Friday, and this is the Coronavirus Watch from the Paste BN Network. Here's the most significant news of the day, as of 12:45 p.m. ET:
- Health director resigns: Dr. Amy Acton became both a beloved and polarizing figure to Ohioans amid the crisis. She has resigned as the state's health director.
- A collection of 62 obscure state and local agencies may end up being crucial players in the fight against coronavirus once vaccines become available. They’re known as immunization registries and they keep track of children’s — and increasingly adults’ — immunizations.
- More than 2 million people have tested positive for the virus in the U.S., and more than 113,000 have died. Worldwide, more than 7.5 million people have tested positive for the virus, and 422,000 have died. See the numbers in your area here.
Need a hug? You're not the only one. The pandemic has left many people very lonely.
It's Loving Day! June 12 marks the day the Supreme Court struck down state bans against interracial marriage. The day is named for the monumental case, Loving v. Virginia, and the interracial couple at its center, Richard and Mildred Loving.
