Coronavirus Watch: Cases surge in Oklahoma ahead of Trump's rally
Add this to the list of unusual things happening as a result of coronavirus lockdowns: Researchers say shark attacks are down because ... well, nobody left their homes for three months.
This is Friday's Coronavirus Watch from the Paste BN Network. Here's the most significant news of the day, as of 2 p.m. ET:
- In Oklahoma, cases are surging ahead of President Donald Trump's rally in Tulsa on Saturday. While Gov. Kevin Stitt said they're "ready", the state Supreme Court is expected to rule on whether those who attend the rally must adhere to CDC guidelines for face masks and social distancing.
- Florida is emerging as an alarming hot spot: The added 3,207 new cases Thursday, shattering the previous daily record. Meanwhile, New York is considering whether to order travelers from Florida to quarantine.
- Top federal officials are privately exploring whether Latinos are to blame for regional spikes in new coronavirus cases, asking in internal communications if Mexicans could be carrying the disease across the border, fueling domestic outbreaks, Paste BN has learned.
- Worth knowing: By July 11, the CDC projects that between 129,000 and 145,000 deaths will be attributed to COVID-19.
- Almost 2.2 million Americans and 8.5 million people globally have had the coronavirus, according to the Johns Hopkins University dashboard. Track the outbreak in your state here.
