Coronavirus Watch: 17 states pause reopening plans
As hospitalizations rise in 12 states, at least 17 are pressing pause on reopening plans.
Some states are taking preemptive measures to postpone further phases of their reopening, while others have rolled back their phases to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. See what your state is doing here.
It's Tuesday, and this is the Coronavirus Watch from the Paste BN Network. Here's the most significant news of the day, as of 1:45 p.m. ET:
- Today's numbers: More than 2.6 million people have tested positive for the virus in the U.S., and more than 126,000 have died. Worldwide, more than 10.3 million people have tested positive for the virus, and more than 507,000 have died. See the numbers in your area here, and see where cases are rising here.
- Americans will not be allowed to travel to European Union countries when the bloc opens up to international visitors July 1, the European Council announced.
- New York, New Jersey and Connecticut added travelers from California, Tennessee and six other states to its quarantine list, pushing the total to 16 states representing 48% of the U.S. population.
- The recent surge in infections has been caused both by some areas reopening too quickly and by people not following guidelines, Dr. Anthony Fauci told lawmakers Tuesday. New cases have been increasing by about 40,000 a day, he said, adding that could rise to 100,000 a day without changes.
- A new swine flu? Researchers have discovered a virus in Chinese pigs that may be able to jump to humans and are sounding the alarm for another potential pandemic.
- "The worst is yet to come" for the coronavirus pandemic, the head of the World Health Organization said Monday.

Before Memorial Day, the majority of coronavirus cases were found in people 45 and older. Now, the opposite is true. People under 45 made up 42% of cases before Memorial Day weekend but 55% of cases reported since then, a Paste BN analysis found. That's based on data from 25 states and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
