Coronavirus Watch: Vaccine nationalism could pose threat to public safety
Florida marked a new daily high in COVID-19 cases by any state, with more than 15,000 new infections being reported Sunday.
The new spike in cases comes just a day after the reopening of Disney World, one of the state's top tourist attractions, where an estimated 16,000 people turned out to Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom on Saturday.
It's Sunday, and this is Coronavirus Watch, from the Paste BN Network. Here is the news you need to know today, as of 2 p.m. ET.
- A White House coronavirus task force member expects deaths to rise amid the recent spike in case numbers across the country. Adm. Brett Giroir, speaking on ABC News' "This Week," cited the rise is hospitalizations as a "very concerning" trend that could lead to an increase in deaths. "We expect hospitalizations to continue to go up," Giroir said.
- Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is pushing for in-school education this fall, saying that there's nothing in the coronavirus data that suggests sending children back to school would be dangerous to them.
- The race for a coronavirus vaccine may have turned into just that: a race. A "me first" attitude might be harboring vaccine nationalism, which pits nation against nation to get and keep enough doses for their citizens.
- Numbers check: 3.2 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the U.S., while 134,000 have died from the disease, per Johns Hopkins University data. Globally, 12.7 million have been infected and 566,000 have died. Track the numbers in your area right here.
