Coronavirus Watch: A new single-day high in global cases
The World Health Organization reported the highest single-day infection total since the pandemic began, announcing 307,930 cases Sunday.
That's a tick higher than the previous high mark of 306,857 cases reported worldwide on Sept. 6.

- Scientists and physicians were outraged that White House appointees reportedly interfered with a basic national public health report when it conflicted with President Trump's coronavirus messaging. The meddling, first reported by Politico, included efforts to stop the publication of a hydroxychloroquine report, a malaria drug often touted by Trump.
- Many stadiums were devoid of fans this weekend as the NFL kicked off Week 1 and college football continued, but images of maskless fans at Florida State's home game drew ire from school officials.
- Meanwhile, the NFL threatened disciplinary action for coaches not wearing masks on the sideline.
- Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak took a jab at President Donald Trump for hosting an indoor campaign rally in his state, saying the "reckless and selfish" event put "countless lives in danger" as COVID-19 continues to spread. "Tell your governor to open up your state," Trump told hundreds of supporters.
- Numbers check: In the U.S., 6.5 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 194,000 have died of it. Globally, more than 29 million have tested positive and 925,000 have died.
