Coronavirus Watch: CDC walks back on guidance that was 'posted in error'
Nearly 200,000 people have died of COVID-19 in the United States, another grim milestone that comes almost seven months after the CDC reported the first U.S. death in late February.
The U.S. death toll accounts for roughly one-fifth of the world's 961,000 deaths from the coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University data.
It's Monday, and this is Coronavirus Watch from the Paste BN Network. Here's the news to know today, as of 1:30 p.m. ET.
- The CDC walked back on guidance that it said was "posted in error" on its website. It had published a webpage Sunday night saying there is "growing evidence" that airborne particles can stay suspended in the air and can travel distances beyond 6 feet. On Monday, the organization said the guidance was a "draft version" that was posted erroneously and updated language is still to come.
- The Emmys went on, albeit in a very different way, but the awards show was without longtime E! host Giuliana Rancic and special correspondent Vivica A. Fox, who both pulled back on covering the virtual red carpet show after testing positive for COVID-19.
- The cruise industry shed light on what a return to sailing would look like for travelers. The protocols include crew and passenger testing as well as enhanced ventilation.
- Jenny Berz is one of the many so-called COVID-19 long haulers, who suffer through symptoms months after their initial diagnosis. Many fear they will never recover. Hundreds of long-haulers have enrolled in "COVID Bootcamp," a recovery program.
