Coronavirus Watch: Pandemic death toll is higher than we thought, suggests study

COVID-19 cases are on the rise in some areas of the country, as 13 states set records for positive tests in a 7-day span, according to a Paste BN analysis of Johns Hopkins data through late Sunday. Check the latest totals in your state right here.

It's Monday, and this is Coronavirus Watch from the Paste BN Network. Here's the news to know today, as of 1:30 p.m. ET.

  • The pandemic may have claimed many more lives than what the COVID-19 death toll depicts. On top of the recorded COVID-19 death toll, researchers found nearly 75,000 more people may have died of pandemic-related causes from March to July, according to a report published Monday in JAMA.
  • President Trump, who over the weekend claimed he no longer has coronavirus but did not present any negative tests, is set to hit the campaign trail again, starting with a Monday rally in Florida.
  • An investigation revealed coronavirus outbreaks in Illinois that previously were not made public.
  • The NFL has been scrambling to deal with a slew of positive COVID-19 cases among players and staff. Eight teams had their schedules altered to account for the infections.

Numbers check: More than 7.7 million people in the U.S. have tested positive for COVID-19 and 214,000 have died of it, per Johns Hopkins data. Globally, 37 million have tested positive and 1 million have died.
