Coronavirus Watch: US to ship out up to 60M AstraZeneca vaccines around the world

Having administered at least one dose of vaccine to roughly 42.5% of its population, the United States on Monday announced plans to distribute up to 60 million doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine to other countries as soon as it receives federal clearance in the coming months. 

AstraZeneca's vaccine has not received emergency use authorization from U.S. health officials, but it is already in use in many other countries.

The plans to broadly ship out vaccine doses comes a day after the White House announced its intention to send resources to India, which is dealing with one of the worst COVID-19 surges the world has seen.

  • The University of California-San Francisco reported the first known case of a male in the U.S. developing a blood clot after receiving the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. More than a dozen previous cases involved women under 50. The potential side effects of the shot have shown to be extremely rare, and some states have already resumed administering it – including California and Florida.
  • Millions of Americans appear to have skipped their second vaccine dose, which could highlight the importance of getting Johnson & Johnson's one-shot vaccine back in the fold.
  • The first – and hopefully last – pandemic Oscars was largely a whiff, at least in terms of TV ratings. Sunday's 93rd annual Academy Awards plunged to 9.9 million viewers, according to preliminary Nielsen estimates. That's down 58% from last year's pre-pandemic 23.6 million viewers, then a record-low that was down by 6 million from 2019. 
  • Once the hot spot for the COVID-19 pandemic, a "reawakening" in New York City has tourists returning as restrictions ease.
