Coronavirus Watch: Nearly all who died over past 6 months were unvaccinated


Preliminary data from a collection of states suggests 99.5% of deaths from COVID-19 over the past six months were among people who are unvaccinated, U.S. health officials said this week.

"Any suffering or death from COVID-19 is tragic. With vaccine available across the country, the suffering and loss we are now seeig is nearly entirely avoidable," Dr. Rochelle Walensky, CDC head said during a White House briefing.

  • Missouri is requesting help from new COVID-19 federal response teams as the Delta variant continues to spread, with surging case numbers and hospitalizations throughout the state

  • Democratic Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed three Republican-sponsored bills Friday, including one that would ban what are known as "vaccine passports."
  • Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama has withdrawn from the Rocket Mortgage Classic prior to the second round after testing positive for COVID-19.
  • India reported more than 400,000 total deaths from COVID-19 Friday, half of them in the past two months, when the delta variant infected hundreds of thousands daily. The U.S. has reported more deaths from COVID-19 than any other country.

Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 33.6 million COVID-19 cases and nearly 605,000 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 182.8 million cases and more than 3.95 million deaths. Nearly 55% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 47% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
