Coronavirus Watch: 36% of Americans have been boosted
About 36% of Americans have already received a COVID-19 booster shot, Jeff Zients, the White House COVID-19 response coordinator, said Monday.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, said he isn’t sure whether Americans will need another booster in the future.
"The honest answer is that we do not know at this point, but we’re collecting data," Fauci said. "We may not need to get boosted every six months or so but if we do, we’ll address it. We’ll find the data, make it public and address it accordingly."

- The WHO's Europe office said projections show the region could face another 700,000 COVID-19 deaths by next spring, topping 2 million in total. There could be "high or extreme stress" on hospital beds in 25 countries, the office said.
- The Department of Defense announced it awarded Pfizer $1.4 billion for an additional 200 million doses of its vaccine. The doses are to be distributed internationally.
- Over 20% of students in the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest school district in the nation, missed the Sunday deadline to report their vaccination status. Those students risk not being able to attend in-person classes.
Today's numbers: The U.S. has reported more than 47.9 million COVID-19 cases and 772,500 deaths, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. Worldwide, there have been more than 258.4 million cases and more than 5.1 million deaths. About 70% of people in the U.S. have received at least one vaccine shot, and about 59% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among U.S. adults, 82% have received at least one shot, and about 71% are fully vaccinated.
