Keeping it Together: Looking for the fountain of youth? Go for a run.
🌞 Hi all, are we Keeping it Together?
Happy Saturday everyone.
Have you ever had a super inconsistent relationship in your life? One you put work into, but leaves you feeling exhausted and powerless, and at times powerful? That’s my relationship with running.
I’ve never had the bug to strap on some running shoes and sweat while out of breath, even though I know it’s good for me. But I've stopped and started many times anyway.
This week, my fellow Wellness colleague and experienced runner, David Oliver, wrote an inspiring piece about a 77-year-old who ran the Boston marathon this week. Not only about her odds-defying athleticism, but also how "exercise is about the only equivalent of a fountain of youth that exists today.”
So, with the help of these tips from David, I’m gonna give running a shot.
- Start slow. Like, really slow. As slow as you can go for two miles. Then slowly add more distance as you get comfortable to reach a baseline of three miles. Go on a few short runs a week and mix in a longer one.
- Remember, it’s a mind game. Running is physical, but convincing yourself to stick to something that’s not always fun – especially when you’re just starting off – is a mental game. Try creating a realistic routine to hold yourself accountable and put on some fun music or a podcast to enjoy while you’re moving those legs.
- Stretch (seriously). Yes, after you’re done and before. Admittedly, it's usually the thing I put off (and often ignore altogether) but David reminded me it's important to avoid injury and keep your body happy. Here’s a video on what stretches are best for your running routine.
Do you have any running advice? Are you on a beginner journey like me? Send me your best tips, tricks or stories at swoodward@gannett.com and I might feature your response in a future edition of Keeping it Together.
👀 Other things in the Wellness world I’m eyeing
- Not only are plums delicious, but you might be surprised by these health benefits.
- Remember the ALS ice bucket challenge from 10 years ago? Well, it’s back, and with a new cause.
- What’s out? Pressuring women to wear makeup and cover up their features. In? Embracing aging.
🦋 And finally, what I’m enjoying this week
- My favorite rom-com author Emily Henry released her newest book this week, and you better believe I bought it immediately.
- I’ve re-entered my crossword era.
- And I’m still boasting about these carrot-shaped macarons I made for Easter.
Until next week!
