'Sardine girl summer' is here

Olรก Keeping it Together subscribers!

It's Sam Woodward, and I'm writing to you from a slightly warmer (and more European) climate.

This week, I'm on vacation in Portugal, but I couldn't help popping into your inbox with a wellness news roundup, travel edition! Among all the things Portugal is known for, tinned fish is up there. If you would've told 10-year-old Sam that she would be spending her own hard-earned dollars on buying sardines as a souvenir, she wouldn't have believed you. But here I am, partaking in "sardine girl summer," loading up my carry-on with them.

And it seems I'm not the only one excited about these petite sea creatures. Wellness reporter and Daily Briefing author Nicole Fallert dove into the internet craze over sardines and what the trend indicates about our culture.

๐ŸŸ Why the sardine girls might be onto something

  • They're actually good for you. Sardines have tons of this essential nutrient, so I don't feel guilty about adding them to salads, pastas or snacking on them with some crackers.
  • Cartoon fish are adorable, right? They're taking over closets and mood boards, not just pantries. Everything from beaded sardine bags to patterned dresses and decorative tins, the aesthetic of the cutesy Mediterranean lifestyle is having a moment. And who can blame them.
  • And they won't hurt your wallet. Sardines and other tinned fish are a cheap, shelf-stable pantry staple (say that ten times fast). This convenience combined with lingering fears/the economic realities of a possible recession, it's no wonder they're the star of the summer.

๐Ÿ‘€ Other Wellness things I'm reading

๐Ÿ’ What I'm loving this week!

  • Traveling to new places can be amazing (and overwhelming), so during this trip I'm making sure to set aside time to journal. I highly recommend a notebook dedicated just for your travels (and bring some tape to add any paper mementos)!
  • And after many years of being a fan, I finished Netflix's thriller series "You" and absolutely loved it. Chef's kiss.
