Good morning! Today we have a column about a potential tax hike introduced by Democratic lawmakers, a story on mask shaming and some other columns from this weekend.
Democrats' tax plan would be a disaster for small businesses
By Brad Close
As usual, the White House offered platitudes this month at the start of Small Business Week. Small businesses are the “engines of our economic progress.” The “pillars of our neighborhoods.” And so on.
But the next day the House of Representatives, with the White House’s backing, announced one of the most dramatic assaults on small business in decades.
Lawmakers unveiled a massive tax-hike package that would jam those “engines of our economic progress” and topple many of those “pillars of our neighborhoods.”
In Washington, D.C, words are meaningless – its actions that matter. And these actions, if enacted, would be a disaster.

Stop mask shaming: COVID vaccines and testing are the real solutions
By Marc Siegel
Keeping schools open is of paramount importance, but we are approaching it the wrong way, targeting the wrong groups, prioritizing the wrong tools.
Too much attention is being paid to masks in the news media and by politicians on both sides of the issue. Although a proper fitting surgical or KN95, or especially an N95, have a distinct value in the fight against a highly transmissible respiratory virus, a mask is of limited value especially if it is the wrong kind of mask or isn’t worn properly, as is frequently the case with young children.
Don’t get me wrong, masks are useful, but we must keep in mind that they are the last ditch effort to prevent transmission, the final (if inefficient) barrier against spreading the virus.
