We look ahead to 2023 with the hope of finding common ground

Happy New Year, everyone! My colleagues and I on the Paste BN Opinion team recently put together our thoughts and wishes for 2023

My hope is that Americans can more fully embrace civility in the coming year. The country is deeply worried about our growing political divisions and the clear contempt those in different partisan camps have for each other.

But how do we go about fixing this?

Too many of us are only friends with those who share our beliefs and opinions. Social media has also contributed to putting us into echo chambers where we don’t have to hear the other point of view.

My recommendation is for more people to make friends with someone they don’t agree with. You don’t have to change your views, but this could lead to more tolerance and civility in our public discourse.

And that would be a huge step in the right direction.
