🔵Good morning, friends of The Short List. It's John, and as I look back over the week's news, I am confronted with yet another mass shooting, this one in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, in which seven were killed and dozens wounded.

If you are sick of reading about mass shootings, well, so am I. So is Paste BN's Rex Huppke, who wrote the column containing today's intro. So is Paste BN Editor-in-Chief Nicole Carroll, who wrote about our newsroom's numb exhaustion in the face of an unending nightmare.

But in the end, it's our job – and our calling. And Paste BN journalists did some great work covering Highland Park, in case you missed it:
