Thousands dead after powerful quake rocks Turkey, Syria
The death toll surpassed 3,400 and was rising Monday after a powerful, pre-dawn earthquake and series of strong aftershocks collapsed thousands of buildings along the Turkish-Syrian border. Hundreds were believed trapped under rubble, and the toll was expected to rise as rescue workers dug through the wreckage.

Heads up, Texas: Severe storm could soon form
Potentially severe thunderstorms will begin to form in Texas Monday, days after the state was hit by an ice storm that froze roads and left seven people dead. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Adam Douty said a storm will strengthen in Texas late Monday into Tuesday, "bringing the next round of wet weather and severe thunderstorms to the region." Thunderstorms could begin Tuesday morning in eastern Texas, and are expected to become severe by midday. See more weather updates in the USA.

Biden's State of the Union clouded by outrage over spy balloon
Attention on President Joe Biden's State of the Union speech Tuesday is now clouded by the political furor over the suspected Chinese spy balloon, with Republicans arguing Biden was too slow to act in shooting it down. On Monday, the Pentagon said it did not shoot the balloon down as it approached Alaska because it didn't pose a military threat.
