4 killed in Alabama, 2 in Louisville during weekend of gun violence

Four people were killed and multiple others injured in a shooting Saturday night at a birthday party in Alabama, police said. The gunfire erupted in Mahogany Masterpiece dance studio in Dadeville, about 50 miles northeast of Montgomery. Pastor Ben Hayes, who serves as the chaplain for the Dadeville Police Department and for the local high school football team, said most of the victims were teens. Two people also died and four were wounded Saturday when someone opened fire on a crowd at a park in Louisville, Kentucky, the second mass shooting of the week in that city. 

Bostonians remember deadly marathon bombing 10 years later

Families of those killed in the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 marked the 10th anniversary of the tragedy early Saturday by slowly walking together to the memorial sites near the finish line and laying wreaths. "The day never leaves me," said Jennifer Black, 71, a realtor from Loveland, Ohio, who was watching the procession and recounted how her race in 2013 was cut short due to the bombing. She is back in Boston to run this year. The 127th Boston Marathon takes place Monday.

More than 70 dead as Sudan's military clashes with rival group

In Sudan, the death toll in fierce fighting between the armed forces and a powerful paramilitary group has risen to over 70. The Sudan Doctors’ Syndicate said at least 670 people were wounded across the country. The clashes capped months of heightened tensions between the military and the Rapid Support Forces group. Those tensions had delayed a deal with political parties to get the country back to its short-lived transition to democracy, which was derailed by an October 2021 military coup.

Fort Lauderdale remains flooded after torrential rains

Parts of Fort Lauderdale in southeast Florida were still facing dangers from high waters after monumental flooding inundated the coastal area this week. Authorities said Sunday they have deployed 27 pumping trucks across the city after rain exceeding 2 feet shut down a major airport, schools and administrative offices for several days. Buildings were flooded, and cars and highways were left underwater. Officials have also set up water distribution stations and warned residents to avoid floodwaters that could contain downed power lines, contaminants, debris, rodents and snakes.

At least 11 killed after Russian missile strikes in Ukraine; arrested US journalist 'not losing hope'

At least 11 people were killed and 22 wounded after Russian missile strikes in the eastern Ukrainian city of Sloviansk, Ukrainian authorities said Saturday. Crews also searched for four more people thought to be trapped under the rubble of an apartment building after Friday's missile strikes.

And Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal correspondent detained in Russia, told his family he is "not losing hope" in a hand-written letter, the newspaper said Friday. Gershkovich also said he continues to read, exercise and write during his detention.
