I'm pro-life, but increase in abortions should concern us all
The annual March for Life will take place Friday in Washington, D.C.
It’s a huge event that celebrates the right to life. I have attended the event many times, even bringing my kids along. The weather is often cold and gloomy, but it’s encouraging and inspiring to see thousands of people stand up for the rights of babies.
In 2022, conservatives were overjoyed to see the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade, returning the regulation of abortions to the states. Since then, many states have banned abortions altogether, like Texas, where I reside now. Other states have virtually no restrictions on abortion.
Abortion measures were on the ballot in 10 states in the November elections. As someone who appreciates state’s rights, I agree with this approach, even though I’m staunchly pro-life.
But something strange has happened since Roe was overturned.
Guttmacher reported in 2023 that the number abortions nationwide exceeded 1 million, the highest number in a decade, and it was more than 10% higher than in 2020. Overall, abortions have declined since the 1980s.
My latest: The left devolves into hysteria over Trump. It's exactly why he won.
The recent increase in the number of abortions is troubling for conservatives and our pro-life movement at large. It shows that legislation – even banning abortion in several states – doesn’t make people as pro-life as we hope.
I’ve often heard the phrase, “You can’t legislate morality.” But that is what laws often attempt to do. They outlaw something that is wrong or dangerous to force moral and ethical standards on society.
So why are women now having more abortions? It’s a question that the pro-life movement needs to answer with humility and sincerity.
Republicans often approach this issue from merely a legislative or scientific point of view, but it’s a deeply human set of challenges that affects millions of women and men.
The next step for conservatives in promoting pro-life values is to fully explore why the number of abortions is rising.
It's been a big week of news. Here's what we're covering:
- Elon is Hitler? Liberals regress to cancel culture to compensate for their loss.
- Trump pardoned more than 1,500 J6 rioters. Presidents can't be trusted.
- Trump's executive orders really aren't 'shock and awe' after Biden's overreach
- Trump promises a 'revolution of common sense.' I say it can't happen fast enough.
- What can we expect from Trump's first 100 days? Here's what you said.
