As a mom, I support Trump's moves to protect women
I’m a proud mom of two boys and two girls. Like most parents, I want to raise strong kids who feel loved and advocate for themselves. This especially applies to my daughters and pervasive transgender ideology that seems intent on erasing them.
In the last two weeks, President Donald Trump has signed several executive orders that protect women and girls a bit more. While I don’t agree with the premise that everything should be pushed through via executive order, I appreciate the message Trump is sending.
The message is this: We see you. We value you.
One of the most disturbing things I’ve witnessed the last decade is the erasure of women and girls. It’s not everywhere: I don’t see it in Texas much.
But I do see transgender ideas and characters prevalent in media, entertainment and pop culture. It’s especially prevalent in sports and higher education. The idea is deeply flawed and rooted in inclusivity and diversity, tenets of liberalism. But instead of promoting these ideas, they seem to be erasing women altogether.
When I read stories of girls who have lost out on awards or scholarships because they were forced to compete against a biological male, my heart breaks for everyone involved.
As a mom, I hate to see kids suffer from gender dysphoria that feels crippling and disorienting. I want to see those girls and boys get the help they need.
My take: Transgender care on kids is dangerous. Trump was right to block it.
I also hate to see girls and women competing against another person with significant physiological advantages, disrupting Title IX, which helped promote fairness for females in sports, among other things.
One of my daughters used to run track, another is in gymnastics and is considering playing volleyball. Losing in sports is common and can push an athlete to improve. But I’d feel awful if they lost because they were not competing on a fair playing field.
A United Nations report last year revealed that female athletes have lost nearly 900 medals to transgender rivals who competed in women’s-only sports.
I don’t want anyone in America to feel marginalized. But President Joe Biden prioritized policies that gave gender identity precedence over biological sex. This is wrong, and it paves the way for women and girls to lose their right to privacy. There are safety concerns as well. My colleague, Ingrid Jacques, tackled this specifically in an excellent column last week.
I want my girls to grow up and be proud of being a woman. This can’t happen if they keep being pushed out of female spaces.
Here's what else we're writing about this week:
- Trump is going to the Super Bowl. That's a good thing – more presidents should.
- Trump and Musk should gut USAID. America needs to fix our own house first.
- Trump's tariff threats are tumultuous for consumers. That won't fix the economy.
- Trump trusts parents to know what's best for their kids. What a concept!
- Trump's right to slim federal workforce, but he shouldn't rule out remote work
