Trump's speech was one of the best I've ever heard

I can’t remember the last time a Republican gave a speech that made me smile and laugh. President Donald Trump did both on Tuesday in his address to Congress, just six weeks into his second term.

Trump tends to speak in a stream of consciousness style that’s irksome for the leader of the free world. But not Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Trump gave one of the best speeches I’ve heard. Here are four takeaways:

1. Trump was proudly pro-America. His tone was encouraging. “America is back!” he said at the beginning. He concluded with inspiration: “Now it is our time to take up the righteous cause of American liberty, and it is our turn to take America’s destiny into our own hands and begin the most thrilling days in the history of our country. This will be our greatest era.”

Trump’s unabashed patriotism is refreshing.

Take our poll: Trump's speech covered everything from tariffs to DOGE. What did you think? Tell us.

2. Trump confidently touted incredible progress in a short amount of time, particularly his decision to let Elon Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency loose on the bloated federal bureaucracy.

“[T]he days of rule by unelected bureaucrats are over,” he said.

3. Trump made sure Americans knew just how much he already has done to secure our nation’s chaotic and porous borders, saying he is waging the “most sweeping border and immigration crackdown in American history.”

Border Patrol officials say illegal crossings have gone down 90% since Trump took office. I live in Texas, so I appreciate that. Biden’s border policies were devastating for American families.

4. Trump had no problem slamming Democrats, who sat in front of him pouting, angry and bitter – refusing to applaud any of the president’s points or even his guests.

“I realize there is absolutely nothing I can say to make them happy or to make them stand or smile or applaud, nothing I can do,” Trump said. “I could find a cure to the most devastating disease, a disease that would wipe out entire nations, or announce the answers to the greatest economy in history or the stoppage of crime to the lowest levels ever recorded, and these people sitting right here will not clap, will not stand and certainly will not cheer for these astronomical achievements.”

He was right. Democrats should be ashamed.

Trump’s speech was articulate, patriotic and effective. If he can keep up his momentum, America will be a much better country in four years. What did you think of the president's address? Take our poll here or email me: nrussell@gannett.com.
