I saw Biden's open border. Why isn't Trump getting credit for securing it?
In early 2024, while an opinion writer at the Fort Worth Star Telegram, I went to Eagle Pass, a strip of the U.S. southern border in Texas where migrants often entered the country illegally.
A few weeks earlier, in December 2023, U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents had almost 250,000 migrant encounters at the southern border, which was a record high. It was a direct result of President Joe Biden’s border and immigration policies, which undid Trump-era policies like Title 42 and Remain in Mexico. But Biden refused to take responsibility.
Although migrant traffic had slowed because of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s efforts to quell the chaos, I saw groups of people, including children, cross the Rio Grande and crawl through fencing to enter the United States.
More from me: What do Democrats get wrong in Abrego Garcia case? Almost everything.
The lack of border security created real problems for Americans, including crimes such as human trafficking and drug smuggling. That is why immigration and border security were top issues for voters in November.
President, Donald Trump made immediate policy changes to end the border chaos, with quick and dramatic results.
In February, the number of migrants who crossed the border illegally dropped to the lowest number in at least a quarter of a century.
This is something most Americans care about, but it does not get the coverage it deserves. Trump has effectively shut down the lawlessness at the southern border.
The Biden administration often claimed they were doing all they could to stop illegal immigration. They did not. Once Trump took office, border security issues were resolved, and quickly.
Trump has already kept his promises on illegal immigration. As a Texan, I’m glad he did.
Here's what else we're writing about:
- I'm tired of how progressives treat boys like mine
- Trump's first 100 days have blown my mind. He's delivering on his promises.
- 77 million Americans voted for Trump. After 100 days, few of them regret it.
- Is Trump finally waking up to the reality that Putin played him on Ukraine?
