Voting change requirement needs update: #tellusatoday
We asked our Twitter followers what they thought about the Supreme Court striking down a key piece of the Voting Rights Act. Comments are edited for clarity and grammar:
Congress should keep the foundational statistics for federal preclearance up-to-date. Without doing so, out-of-date facts will fuel naysayers.
— @scottccote
Putting the preclearance formula in the hands of Congress might actually roll us back another 20 years or so.
— @BeHeardChris
Updates are needed to the Voting Rights Act, but I'm not holding my breath for this Congress to make those changes happen.
— @JakeThornburgh
2013 is very different from 1965. The Voting Rights Act should reflect changes in culture, and the mind-set and values of the times.
— @HDBrowning
The Supreme Court did what it did. Now Congress needs to act to make sure not one American is unfairly restricted from voting.
— @VAYD
Throwing out Section 4 of the Voting Rights Act is like throwing out your washing machines because you've washed all your clothes. They get dirty again.
— @JimmyCLewis
It was an outdated provision. The decision was right.
