Barring some electromagnetic catastrophe that renders digital information as inaccessible as Pompeii, we are probably past the point where even the most zealous regulation can restore the level of privacy that our parents enjoyed. Our lives, health and economic well-being all hinge, at least to some degree, on the same intrusive technologies that scare us out of our pants. What we can and should demand is a reasonable amount of control over which information we choose to divulge, stringent restrictions on who has access to it, and regular opportunities to review and correct it.
