Ex-NYT editor gives 'classy' speech: Your Say
Jill Abramson, recently ousted as top editor at "The New York Times," gave the commencement address at Wake Forest University on Monday. Comments from Facebook are edited for clarity and grammar:
Jill Abramson provided a classy response in her graduation speech. I empathize with her issue about fair and equal compensation. Tough leadership style, although appropriate in select situations, is old school.
She's a quality person and a professional who hopefully has learned from this situation and will do well in the future.

Some women are poor managers, just like some men are poor managers. Being hard-nosed is one thing, but putting co-workers down in public is not a good sign. That's just mediocre management.

It is a fascinating comment on gender equality that, when a high-level woman is booted, some people assume that she has been mistreated because she is a woman. If a man is booted, some assume it is because he deserved it. Abramson was the top editor. Gender bias would have come into play well before getting the position.

The best thing for her to tell those graduates would have been to remember that to an employer, they are a human resource, not individuals. Employers will take your skills, talent and life at the expense of your family if you let them, only to drop you at a minute's notice when it is convenient.
