Voters brace for negative political ads: Your Say
With just two months until Election Day, campaigns are heading into the final stretch. Comments from Facebook are edited for clarity and grammar:
When was the last time you heard of a political race that was run on a positive message?
Sure, some advertisements trumpet what this candidate or that candidate did that helped residents of some locality, but mostly the ads tout: "Vote for X because Y is a monster who did/wants to do Z, and it will destroy your life."
— John Rookwood
Why does negative campaigning work? Because the half-truths stretched beyond recognition are entirely believable by the masses.
It works, and people are stupid enough to let it work.
— Thomas Carper
Elections are all about slogans and half-truths. They have little to do with important issues. Regardless of the amount of money in campaigns, that will always be the case. Soundbites win or lose elections.
— Dick Samuels
How about we face the fact that even though politicians tell us we deserve a lot more, we might not.
We should stop believing that this or that politician is on our side and accept that he or she is bent on winning. I wish the Republican and Democratic parties would put forth candidates who want to leave office after their service.
Also, I wish more of us would focus on how we take care of ourselves and our families.
— John K Collings III
The only reason Republicans have a House majority is because of gerrymandering and the lack of Democrats who vote in midterms. Older, white males who make up the Republican Party are dying, and with them GOP influence in the country.
Many Republicans are on the wrong side of gay marriage, immigration and climate change. Perhaps they will take the Senate, but with President Obama's veto pen, it won't mean much. By 2020 or 2024, more states will be trending Democratic.

Letter to the editor:
Our country is in deep trouble with massive debt, clueless politicians, moral decline and the threat of foreign aggressors at our doorstep.
It is time for Americans to step up and start to make things right. In our elections this fall, vote for good men and women who understand the proper role of government. We have a president who it appears is not qualified to be in office. He has offered none of the transparency he promised.
Our system of checks and balances makes it imperative that Congress takes action against abuse by the executive branch. The way to have that happen is to put people in office who will stand up for what is right.
Please educate yourself as we approach election season and vote in a way that will preserve liberty and save our republic from destruction.
