Time to make a deal with Iran? Your Say

Writer Seyed Hossein Mousavian is absolutely right in his piece "Iran ready for a nuclear deal: Column."

Iran is vital to our national security concerns in the region. President Obama and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani are doing their best to find an opening. Arrayed against them are forces on both sides that want the estrangement to continue. To what end is hard to discern, for the only outcome would be more death and destruction.

Imagine the end of 35 years of enmity with Iran. It could begin the process of building trust between our two countries that has been sorely missing. It could further lead to Iran's help in fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. It could also lead to Iran using its influence to end the horrendous bloodletting in Syria. As a great, powerful country, we can afford to go the last mile.

Time and circumstances will show whether a deal is agreeable and enforceable. We must wait and see the results.

At that time we can then evaluate the situation to see whether the critics are disagreeing for partisan reasons or because of principled concerns.

"We have made impressive progress," Under Secretary Wendy Sherman said. How can we see the progress made? Are we to just take her word for it?

Iran will agree, then do what it wants to do.
