Giuliani's comments distract from true issues: Your Say

Letters to the editor:

The old adage comes back to haunt our country's citizens too frequently in U.S. politics: Actions speak louder than words. Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani's latest sideswipe at President Obama is merely empty, counterproductive political rhetoric. He criticized Obama for allegedly not being brought up like Giuliani and for not loving America ("White House: Giuliani's comments on Obama 'horrible'").

It seems unrealistic now to expect or demand that our national politicians come up with detailed plans to tackle the pressing issues of climate change, immigration, deteriorating infrastructure, jobs, health care and veterans' benefits. These politicians are truly unexceptional.

President Obama doesn't love America? What's new? Many leftists view America as the home of racism, greed, imperialism and injustice. Their fondest dream is to start over and create the kind of country they want.

Obama's incessant calls for "change" during the 2008 election represented neither hyperbole nor metaphor. When he predicted that "we are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America," he meant every word. As commentary writer Jonah Goldberg notes, no one seeks to fundamentally transform something he loves.

On the left, patriotism means loving the country America could be, not the country it is.
