For diet, does government know best? #tellusatoday

The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee suggested individuals consider the environmental impact of food choices in a healthy diet. Comments from Twitter and Facebook are edited for clarity and grammar:

What do I consider a healthy diet? Vegan or vegetarian. The environment was my main reason for switching. Feeling better is a bonus.

A diet that contains the recommended levels of untainted nutrients is healthy.

Fruits and vegetables are healthy, when one can afford them. The economy dictates health.

A nutritional panel is advising the Agriculture Department, which will issue updated dietary guidelines for Americans this year. My question is, why does the government need to spend its time and resources telling me how I should eat? Thanks, but I can figure that out and make my own decisions!

Eating green sounds great. Can you find those products in your local grocery store? Why should I have to pay extra to eat healthy food?

George Carlisle

Ask your kids if the lunches at schools are yummy. Schools use the government's dietary guidelines. You are fools to let the government tell you what you should eat! Perhaps it should first regulate what those people on welfare eat. After all, the taxpayers are supporting them.
