Punchlines: What's going on in Indiana?
After days of protesting, confusing news conferences and pressure from outside corporations, Indiana's lawmakers agreed Thursday to amend the controversial Religious Freedom and Restoration Act to ensure that state businesses will not be allowed to discriminate against gays and lesbians.
The legislation, which gives the state limited ability to burden a person or corporation's religious practice, will be the first in the state's history to include the words "sexual orientation" and "gender identity." But some still wonder whether the law, even after these adjustments, will amount to anything more than legalized discrimination.
What are the late-night comics wondering? Whether Indiana Gov. Mike Pence's most recent news conference, during which he stated that the bill was never intended to discriminate, was just one big April Fools' joke. David Letterman said it's getting so bad in Indiana that car pool lanes are discriminating against gays.
