Punchlines: Hello, @POTUS
President Obama — the first president to leverage the power of social media to get into the White House — has finally been let loose on Twitter. Monday, Obama sent out his first official tweet using the newly created @POTUS handle.
Before then, Obama would occasionally tweet as himself using the initials "bo" at the end of comments sent out through the @WhiteHouse account and @BarackObama, which is run by Organizing for Action staff.
So what was @POTUS' first tweet? "Hello, Twitter! It's Barack. Really! Six years in, they're finally giving me my own account." In his bio, Obama described himself as a dad and husband. Well the dad part was a given, says comic Seth Meyers. I mean, anyone who starts their first official comment on one of the most popular social media sites in the world with "Hello, Twitter," is obviously somebody's dad.
