Will campus-carry laws make students safer? #tellusatoday
Texas is slated to become the ninth state to allow concealed weapons on public college campuses. Comments from Facebook and Twitter are edited for clarity and grammar:
I think it would be bad for college students, with their drinking and immaturity, to carry guns. But security guards and other authority figures should be allowed to, so people know everyone there isn't disarmed.
— James B. Huntington
Allowing the carrying of concealed guns on college campuses will force a perpetrator to think twice, and that alone will help keep schools safe.
— John Amann
What makes a campus so different from any other environment, like a mall or park?
— Jack Burton
The issue is that concealed-carry permits are not issued only to college men and women who are sober and responsible. It is not enough that they do the right thing most of the time; it is important that they do the right thing all the time if they are carrying. And this age group is not well known for that.
I shoot, and I am a grad student. I think allowing guns on a college campus is a terrible, terrible idea.
— Steve Hall
Why wouldn't it be OK for a law-abiding citizen to carry anywhere?
— @RockRt66
The notion is nonsense and frightens me as a student on an American college campus.
— @danielalexbaum
I think it is going to scare a lot of people that victims will be able to defend themselves, and that's a good thing.
