Raising federal gas tax would sting: #tellusatoday

Letter to the editor:

Paste BN’s Editorial Board was right on target urging common sense from our Congress to repair our crumbling infrastructure (“Raise the gas tax already: Our view”).

The federal gas tax is an antiquated 18.4 cents per gallon! This is nonsense. Modern countries’ gas taxes are closer on average to more than $2 per gallon. The longer we delay, the more expensive the solution.

Now, while gas prices are relatively low, is the time for Congress to face up to our problems and increase incrementally the federal gas tax to at least $2 per gallon. This would provide secure, long-term funding to operate this country efficiently.

We asked our followers what they thought about raising the federal gas tax. Comments from Twitter are edited for clarity and grammar:

Raising the gas tax does nothing more than hurt the little guy and give the government more to waste.

If the money will be used as promised, we have to lose something to gain something else right? We’ll just see.

It would make it more expensive to get to work and buy groceries, and unaffordable for families to spend quality time visiting each other: thumbs down.

— @DeeHuckins

We ought to raise the corporate taxes before we do anything else.
