To regain trust, Chicago police have work to do: #tellusatoday

In the wake of the release of the Laquan McDonald shooting video, the Justice Department announced Monday that it is investigating the Chicago Police Department. Comments from Facebook are edited for clarity and grammar:

Big deal. The cops will get a strongly worded letter, and nothing will change. What Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced is an investigation into the “pattern and practices” of Chicago police to determine if there are systemic, unconstitutional civil rights violations in the use of force.

The whole thing is a joke. We all saw the video of a stupid kid who was said to be high on PCP and got executed by a cowardly police officer. The police reports contradicted the video. We all know this is a coverup, and nobody will be held accountable.

Investigate the criminals, not the cops.

— Ray Fleming

We need to change some laws. If a person is killed by a police officer, while resisting arrest, good. No more lawsuits by families of criminals who die in custody or for resisting arrest.

POLICING THE USA: A look at race, justice, media

A lot of people doing exactly what the police tell them to do have things end badly. Plenty have died in handcuffs, already on the ground.

Sometimes people run because they are scared to death — not because they are guilty.

If the police were doing such good work, why did they avoid releasing the McDonald video for a year? I am willing to give the benefit of the doubt to the police, but the police do need to clean up the troublemakers.

After the McDonald video, who can trust the word of the Chicago police or the county prosecutor? I don’t!

I want a federal grand jury to review every shred of evidence.

Federal probe should cast wide net

We asked what followers thought about the federal investigation of the Chicago Police Department.

This investigation is much needed. The Justice Department needs to restore trust between Chicagoans and the Chicago PD.

The police have one of the most stressful jobs. You can’t start investigating every single split-second decision.

Investigate the mayor. Corruption and culture of racism start there!

— @VTRaiderBooster

Investigation means nothing without vigorous oversight to ensure that unacceptable behavior ceases.
