Terrorism fears, ideological diversity: Second look

Letters to the editor:

Back American values

We cannot take our democracy for granted. Americans may have forgotten that Adolf Hitler came to power in a democratic election. The statements of some Republican candidates are reminiscent of speeches that Hitler gave.

Even worse, these statements give legitimacy to ill-informed fears of an apparently substantial share of the American public. These Americans have forgotten the values that this country was founded upon — values critical to the success of the American experiment.

We who support that experiment should stand up and strongly, vocally reject these abhorrent views. We should expect our leaders in both political parties to do the same.

POLICING THE USA: A look at race, justice, media

Support diversity of ideas on campuses

America’s colleges and universities received $38 billion in private support last year. This came from foundations, businesses, and individuals across the political spectrum. So why is the Charles Koch Foundation’s giving being singled out? (“Campus donations: Objections”)

Simple: Partisan groups like UnKochMyCampus want to stifle the diversity of ideas on college campuses.

That’s not what they say, of course. They claim to seek “transparency.” But they only target those with whom they disagree. They are, after all, not named Transparency My Campus.

The information they claim to seek — the amount of money provided and its purpose — is already publicly available. We work with about 300 schools, which are all listed on our website. Their programs explore economics, philosophy, entrepreneurship, criminal justice reform and more.

Students, faculty and society will suffer if they succeed in driving the diversity of ideas from America’s college campuses.

Report safety concerns

We are told to be alert and watch our surroundings. The question has to be asked why San Bernardino suspect Syed Farook’s family did not have any idea about the 2,000 rounds of 9mm ammunition, 12 pipe bombs and 2,500 rounds of .223-caliber ammunition.

Did his or his wife’s family never visit? We must report all our suspicions, be it concerning family members or friends, and be willing to confront our loved ones when we think they are on a destructive path.
