Some teams, players lose big with NFL draft: Your Say

Letter to the editor:

A first round NFL draft pick doesn’t guarantee a winning season. These picks may only see scrimmage time in the next two years. And when they play, whether their actions result in a single game win or a winning season, the loser is the “American Joe” who has to shell out an extra $10, $15 or $20 to see his team play because of free agency and player-agent deals (“NFL draft: Winners and losers from Thursday night's first round”).

An outstanding high school or college career does not guarantee the same results in the NFL. Team owners should wait to see if these rookies deliver, then pay them a percentage of the tickets sold per games won of games played.

The Browns got third- and fourth-round picks in 2016, a first-round pick next year and a second-round pick in 2018 for next to nothing in their trade with the Eagles. The Browns didn’t really need their No. 2 pick, so moving down to No. 8 to get the Eagles to give up those picks was a no-brainer. The Eagles must be convinced that the next Tom Brady is in this draft.

One of the big losers in this year’s draft is Jared Goff. He is the first draft pick to be relegated to the miserable incompetence that will befall the Rams as they return to the ineptitude that plagued them for most of their previous 49 years in Los Angeles.
