Strong sentiments showcased in the capital: #tellusatoday
Readers react to the inaugural weekend events.
Large crowds assembled in Washington for Donald Trump’s inauguration on Friday and the Women’s March the following day. Facebook comments are edited for clarity and grammar:
The U.S. now has a real president who puts America first.
— Thomas Davis
Right on, my sisters in the march! We have the to peacefully assemble and to exercise our First Amendment rights.
— Vasilisa Hamilton
Trump has so many conflicts of interest. He’s putting his family in the government, he hasn’t shown his taxes, he has threatened freedom of press. Maybe that is some people’s definition of putting America first but it is certainly not the definition for those who did not vote for him.
— Ana Calix
This march is a bunch of ignorant people. Women have exactly the same rights that men do. They even have the right to kill their unborn babies. What else do they want?
— Edgar Fuss
If you need to understand why women march, look no farther than the vile comments by those opposing the march. Maybe a million of your sisters have something important to say. Maybe you try to understand and stop blustering. After centuries of oppression, there are a few things that still need to be fixed.
— Christine Marie Mason
They’re marching for women’s rights, but what rights are being taken away from women? They’re just protesting the fact that they didn’t like the outcome of the presidential election. This march took away from the actual women’s rights movements of earlier years.
— Kyle O’Neill
I don’t think there was anything Trump could have said during his inaugural speech that would have appeased the anti-Trump crowd. So why bother? Now when he sits at the negotiating table and agrees to a slightly more moderate position, his opponents will think they are getting a great deal when in reality they will be giving Trump exactly what he wants. The man is far more intelligent than people give him credit for.

We asked our followers to share their thoughts, and grade, President Trump’s inaugural speech. Tweets are edited for clarity and grammar:
Two out of 10. This was not a campaign stop. I was looking for hope and received more stress.

Best speech ever! America first! Eradicate radical Islam!
—@drmarcmonte
Some people are really calling this the best speech ever? Shows how uneducated and biased they are. Trump supporters are clearly fueled by hate, bigotry and delusions of grandeur.
—@HonorollSociety
Very encouraging words from the president of the United States!
—@JancoBoy
Not very presidential. Trump presented a very dark vision of this great country.
