Noah calls on Mueller to get to the bottom of Jussie Smollett case

Things are changing so quick in the hate-crime case (or was it a hoax?) that watchers are getting whiplash. Comics explore in Best of Late Night.

So, what exactly happened to Jussie Smollett?

First he said he was attacked by two supporters of President Donald Trump who beat him up while screaming about MAGA country. Then the Chicago police said the entire thing was a hoax, and that Smollett actually staged the attack and paid two men (by check) to pretend the hate crime was real. Now the 16 charges lobbed against the actor, who starred in the hit drama "Empire," for the incident have been dropped.

Smollett appears to be walking away scot-free, claiming that he's been exonerated. The county prosecutor says he hasn't been.

Stephen Colbert is so confused he doesn't know where to begin. See today's Best of Late Night, above, for his best explanation.

This exonerated-not-exonerated bit sounds way too familiar to Comedy Central's Trevor Noah. He calls on special counsel Robert Mueller to get to the bottom of it. See his plea in today's webisode.
