How did 2019 begin?

Well in Washington, it began with the carry over of a government shutdown from 2018.  After that ended, comic Bill Maher noted, President Donald Trump declared an emergency at the border. What prompted Mexico to say they might pay for the wall after all? Maher explains in this look back at the best jokes of 2019, above.

But the comics didn't just talk about the wall. They tackled the Russia investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller (complete with a CD release of the report, reviewed by Conan O'Brien); a new slogan for Nike, promoted by Jimmy Fallon; and impeachment (find out what made Trevor Noah cry).

Fellow Comedy Central late-night host Jim Jefferies told us what would happen if you arranged all 24 Democratic presidential candidates end to end, and Samantha Bee and Hasan Minhaj delved into the dangers and rewards of the nation's focus on impeachment. And Stephen Colbert shows us why 2019's person of the year is better than the rest of us.

Let's not forget about the most groundbreaking moment of late-night in 2019 — Lilly Singh, a female comedian from Canada of Indian heritage, busting up the landscape with her own talk show. In case you missed it, take a look at her video introduction to the world (beyond social media, a landscape that she had already dominated for years), below.
