It's COVID vaccine season! Why do Republicans hate the one thing Trump did right?
A new COVID vaccine is a liberal's chance to thank former President Donald Trump for the one thing – and only one thing – he did right. The one thing his own party will criticize him over.
It’s vaccine booster season, baby! That wonderful time of year when radicals like me who “trust science” and “believe medical experts” get to shine.
That’s right, the Food and Drug Administration just approved the new COVID-19 vaccine Monday, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will make a final call on the new shots Tuesday. By week’s end, me and my fellow grounded-in-reality heads might be gettin’ the hottest new jab, doing that classic counterculture thing where we follow public health advice in the interest of keeping ourselves and our fellow citizens safe.
WHACKY!
COVID vaccine is the one thing former President Trump did right
Personally, as a part of the “I appreciate your blog post but think I’ll just listen to an actual doctor instead” community, I celebrate the arrival of a modified coronavirus vaccine that protects against more recent variants.
I also celebrate my annual opportunity to thank former President Donald Trump for the one thing – and only one thing – he did right: launching the federal Operation Warp Speed effort that led to the original vaccine’s remarkably quick development.
That celebration is made more entertaining by the fact that many Republicans wholeheartedly disavow the medical miracle that happened during Trump’s one term.
GOP COVID mask mandate fears misplaced: Widespread COVID mask mandates aren't a thing, no matter how much Republicans freak out
Even Trump doesn't understand why his voters don't like vaccine
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a GOP presidential primary candidate facing off against Trump, recently discouraged people from getting the new shots, siding with his state’s anti-vaccine surgeon general and saying, incorrectly, the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines is “probably negative.”
In more than half a dozen counties in Florida, the local Republican Party has absurdly declared the vaccine a bioweapon.
Beyond COVID: Florida anti-mandate law about masks, vaccines endangers senior communities
Trump was recently asked on Fox News whether the COVID-19 vaccine works, and he said: “I really don’t want to talk about it because, as a Republican, it’s not a great thing to talk about because for some reason, it’s just not.”
LOL! I love vaccine season.
My radical view this time of year: MORE VACCINES, PLEASE!
Once the CDC weighs in on the new coronavirus shots, I’ll be looking over the recommendations and rebelliously following them. Then when it’s my turn to get an appointment, I’ll wait in line reflecting on all the other great vaccines I’ve gotten: measles, mumps and rubella; polio; hepatitis B.
And of course, the annual flu shot, an always-wild celebration of preventative medicine. I just love going to the pharmacy and letting my freak flag fly by helping mitigate the spread of viruses.
Sometimes when I’m prattling on about how a healthy society requires a shared set of facts and respect for people who are experts in their fields, I hear from people who support former President Trump (except for on the vaccine thing) and they politely suggest: “WHY DON’T YOU GO GET YOUR 16TH FAKE COVID JAB YOU WOKE LIBERAL SHEEP?!?!”
To which I say, “Yes, please! Where do I sign up?”
Happy vaccine season, to all who celebrate. (And rest in peace to those who don’t.)
