Zoo camera captures rare moment endangered 'African unicorn' calf takes his first steps
Rare footage captured the first moments of one the world's most mysterious creatures.
The endangered okapi, nicknamed the African unicorn, is one of the least known and understood species on the planet. Due to their elusive nature, few people have witnessed an okapi birth — until now.
CCTV at Chester Zoo in England captured the first moments of an okapi calf with his mother Ada after a 14-month pregnancy.
“The birth of an okapi is always a very special occasion and cause for celebration,” said Fiona Howe, the lead keeper at the zoo. “But to watch as mum Ada calmly welcomes her new baby into the world and gently encourages him to his feet, was nothing short of magical and offers a special insight into one of the nature's most elusive and secretive species.”
Zookeepers named the calf Miloli, which means "joy" in the Bantu language of central and southern Africa. They hope the birth will shed new light on this rare species.
